ADDINGTON MARKET Better Prices For Some Ewe Gasses

There was a slightly better sale for two-tooth and older ewes at Addington market yesterday. The medium class of two-tooth showed the most marked advance and could be quoted 3s or 4s up on late rates. In the older ewe section all but the plain old ewe down in the mouth sold at values 2s to 3s better. Quality in the ewe offering was much better than at the last sale and this helped to give the sale a better tone.

The best of the lambs sold at rates up to 5s better than last week but the quality of the offering of these was better. Average to good lambs were dearer by 2s to 3s a head, but there was less inquiry for carry-over lambs.

The entry totalled 22,253 compared with 26,095 last week and included 6728 lambs, 3521 two-tooth ewes, 11,761 older ewes and 243 wethers.

STORE LAMBS There is still a very good demand for the better class of store lamb which has some condition and, will fatten, but yesterday’s market emphasised the diminishing inquiry for plainer lambs and carry-over sorts. The top lambs yarded were of better quality, and prices paid for the best lambs were up to 5s better than last week. Average to good lambs benefited by the shorter entry of this class, and values were firmer by 2s to 3s a head.

While the lambs with some condition were improved in standard, the over-all quality of the carry-over lines was not as good, and there were not as many big lines selling within the average price range. Once again, there was a buyer for all lots, and passings were few in spite of slacker bidding.

For ewe lambs, it was not a very outstanding sale, with only a few pens coming forward, and only the very best had a ready sale at prices up to 275. The balance sold at rates comparable with those for wether lambs. Quality overall was not high. A few pens of shorn lambs were offered, and these met a sound sale with a fairly good demand. The best of these made up to 20s for Romneys.

The pick of the Down cross lambs made up to 31s 6d, with Romney and Romney cross wether lambs to 38s, and fine wools to 37s 6d. The best of the wether lambs made from 30s to 38s, with good at 24s to 295, average at 16s to 235, and plain and light down to 6s. For ewe lambs the best price for Corriedales was 275. The best of the ewe lambs sold from 25s to 275, with average at ‘ 20s and others from 7s 6d to 10s. The market was topped by D. A. Ferguson (Annat) with 149 Romney cross wether lamb&, which changed Hands at 38s, and E. R. Watkins (Springbank) gained 37s 6d for the tops of his 235 three-quarterbreds. For Down cross lambs, P. Parkinson (Kaituna) gained 31s 6d for a pen of 50. Watson and Topp, Ltd. (Waipara) sold 45 Corriedale wether lambs at 30s. The ewe lamb sale was topped by R. J. TWO-TOOTH EWES There was a much better sale for two-tooths than last week. In the first place, the yarding was much improved in quality, with a useful representation of Romneys, and the sale generally had a much better tone. While the best of the Romney and fine wool sheep sold at fully up to late rates, it was the medium class of sheep that enjoyed the best sale. These showed an advance of 3s or 4s on late rates, but there was a tendency for the demand for this class to slacken off a little towards the close.

The best of the Romneys realised from 69s to 755, with good at 60s to 68s, and others at 48s to 555. In the case of the fine wool sheep, the top class in the yarding brought from 56s to 635, good 47s to 555. average 38s to 465, and others at 20s to 365.

There were, several good sales of Romneys. The mai-ket was topped by E. C. Latter (Kincaid Downs), with 66 at 755. Alford Station, Ltd. (Ashburton), also sold 56 ,at 745. and 56 at 725, and Mrs A. D. Poulton (East Eyreton) realised 73s for 63. In the fine wool section, the sale was headed by P. W. Smail (Hororata), with 73 Corriedales selling at 63s out of a line of 199 which realised from 59s upwards. Sales included:—

Older Ewes In the older ewe section also the level .of quality was a little better than at the last sale with a few more useful farmers’ sheep included in addition to the heavy tally of old and plain ewes. For the latter class the mar ret remained very much as it has been lately with little demand except - at very low rates. Once more there were some sales of

these at only a few shillings a head and one pen was passed in at only Is 6d. For other classes there was, however, an advance of 2s or 3s a head and values were an improvement on some sales at recent ewe fairs.

The pick of the Romneys realised from 38s 6d to 43s with good at 31s to 375, average at 21s to 29s 6d and others at 8s to 17s. In the fine wool section the best of the selection brought from 33s 6d to 48s, good from 28s 6d to 325, average 20s to 26s and others from 3s to 15s.
