SCHOOL MATCH DRAWN

Timaru B.H.S. Makes 99

The annual cricket match between St. Andrew’s College and Timaru Boys’ High School, which ended at the college ground yesterday, was drawn.

At the start of the day St. Andrew’s. 54 for one wicket, required 260 more runs to catch Timaru’s •core. -But wickets fell fairly steadily, although. A. T. Waters gave a particularly, good display of batting. His. innings was clearly the best- of the match, with the strokes on the off side of the highest quality. Waters reached 39, but then ran himself out.

The highest scorer was E. Hayes, who made a rather patchy but quite invaluable 77. He made some very fine strokes in front of the wicket, but had some very uncertain moments. Hayes and W. J. Thompson scored 80 for the seventh wicket, a partnership which averted any prospect of St. Andrew’s having to follow-on.

For Timaru, B. R. Taylor, whose 25-yard run was somewhat at odds with ‘his pace, took five wickets. He was not impressive against the earlier batsmen, but in his final spell he bowled beautifully. M. Mareko, the left-arm spinner, did not take a wicket but flighted the ball well, kept a. good length, and turned a little from leg. Timaru fielded erratically, but the field placing was good, and it made runs hard to obtain, notwithstanding the very fast outfield. Timaru batted again, and although the batsmen did not take undue risks, the side was all out for 99. Taylor, who made 44, was dropped at cover early in his innings, but afterwards played exceptionally well. The St. Andrew’s fielding was an improvement on the first day’s display, and E. R. Hignett bowled his off-breaks most ably. His faster ball deceived the batsmen several times, and he finished with 10 wickets for the match. P. Taylor, a slow left-hander, bowled steadily and earned his three wickets. Scores were:—

UNIVERSITIES CRICKET

Play Washed Out At Melbourne

(N.Z. Press, Association—Copyright) MELBOURNE, March 4. Heavy overnight rain washed out play on the second day of the cricket match between Australian Universities and New Zealand University today. The Melbourne University oval was covered with pools of water this morning, and the captains of both teams agreed that play was, impossible. Rain was still falling this afternoon, but if the weather clears the game will resume tomorrow and be completed on Friday. The wicket has been covered, but there is every likelihood that water has seeped in under the edges.
