SOVEREIGN FOR TOWN HALL
Former Citizen’s Gift A shining golden sovereign, received anonymously yesterday by Town Hall Promotion, has given the organisers as much pleasure as any gift in the fundraising campaign—particularly because of the sentiments m the accompanying letter: — “About 50 years ago. as. a young man in my early twenties, my employers (a toa dl s? warehousemen in Dunedin) transferred me to Christchurch as one of their travellers. My salary was near the two sovereign mark, says the writer. “From infancy I was taught to be thrifty and in those days I saved a few sovereigns eve ry year. The commercial community was very kind to me and I many friends in your beautiful city. “On more than one occasion, when I travelled abroad, I was armed with a letter of introduction from your then mayor. I reflect on those happy days and can think of no better way of showing my appreciation than by handing over my last golden sovereign to the Town Hall Promotion Fund Committee.” The present value of the sovereign is about £2 17s. But the secretary of Town Hall Promotion (Mr H. R. Pool) thinks there may be someone who would pay much more for this relic of pioneer days and still further swell the town hall fund. “What offers,” he asked yesterday.
