Floral Festival
Sir.—l would like to protest about the inclusion of girls’ marching teams in the floral procession on Saturday. Much time, effort and money had gone into 1 the preparation of the floats • which in many cases were hidden i from the view of spectators by j marching teams which walked J too close to and often abreast of the floats. If these girls must be . included, I feel that they should J march either at the beginning or ) at the end of the procession— , certainly not among the floats. — . Yours, etc., ■ H.C.W. March 1, 1959. [All other comments he had ] heard were that the marching girls gave additional colour and . interest, said Mr D. R. Bowman, ■ convener of the floral procession committee. The girls had been instructed to march well to the flanks of floats but between them, to keep the crowds back and give everyone a good view. They succeeded in this. Marching teams might occasionally have come abreast of floats through the difficulty of young children keeping their trolleys evenly spaced. Without the marching girls, the procession would have seemed short. The remedy was better entries for future processions.]
