ADDINGTON MARKET Smaller Fat Cattle And Sheep Entry; Values Improve

Fat sheep were in reduced numbers at Addington Market yesterday and prices took a turn upwards for prime medium weight wethers and good cutting ewes, regaining last week’s fall and improving slightly on the previous week. Other fat sheep classes were fully firm on late rates to a shade better. The fat lamb market was again sound and values for the best lines firmed.

There was a short yarding of good quality fat cattle and prices improved for the best grades of steers and heifers. Cows were fully firm. Values for good steers rose by up to £2 a head, with heifers showing a similar trend. Store cattle met little inquiry, even for lines of good useful quality, and valued were back by £2 to £3 a head.

FAT LAMBS There was a good sound sale for fat lambs in a market which had fewer plain and unfinished entries, and the over-all standard was improved. There was a good response from the trade, and values for the best heavy butchers’ lambs advanced by Is to 2s a head. Local lambs were in good condition, and the offering was swelled by a number of pens of very good quality West Coast lambs.

A few pens of shorn lambs were yarded, and these again commanded a ready market at values little changed frbm last week. The entry was 723, compared with 067 last week. The fat lamb market was topped by A. J. and A. Rothery (Rotomanu), who sold a line of 72 at S rices ranging from 59s Id to 73s d. J. Logan (Rakaia) had a good sale with fopr at 67s Id, and B. - FAT SHEEP Fat sheep values firmed for the better class of stock, with the emphasis mainly on the prime mediumweights of wethers and on prime butchers* lines of ewes. The entry was barely half that of last week, with only 1918 coming forward, compared with 3900 last week. The wether market showed a rise of 2s to 3s for the prime medium sorts, with heavy prime butchers lines a shade better. Light and unfinished sorts were unchanged from last week, but heavy wethers, which were not yarded in great numbers, sold soundly with a slight improvement. Good quality four-tooth wethers, which sold exceptionally wen at last week’s sale, were not sought after so strongly and held to late rates. , . In the ewe sectton, the sale opened with values advancing by 2s to 3s a head, and this level was maintained until the concluding races, when prices became erratic and moved upwards with anything showing quality commanding good competition. Freezing weights were little changed on late rates, and light and plain lines again attracted little attention from the gallery. While the trade was particularly active among the higher prices, there were a number of pens taken by grazier interests. Old and heavy ewes had an erratic sale, with values closing well above opening rates, and an over-all level of about 2s to 3s up on last week. ... « Wether sales were headed by G. J. Francis (Halswell), who sold a pen at 68s Id. and the next highest price of 65s Id was shared by G. B. Henderson (Winchmore) and J. Logan (Rakaia). For his line of 59. which averaged 62s Id, Logan s lowest price was 60s Id. An undisclosed vendor was paid 64s Id for a pen. and J. Mackie (Kaikoura) realised 63s Id for one lot. Sales at 62s Id were made by D. W. Lemon (Ashburton), J. J. Keenan (Kaikoura), P. H. Letham (Ashburton), and R. G. Brown (Ashburton). For ewes the top price was 36s Id, which was paid to J. Logan (Rakaia) for an outstanding pen of sheep. H. G Petrie was next With a line of 45 which made up to 32s Id. and H. C. A. Sidey (Hawarden) and D. Inkson (West Eyreton) both received 31s Id. J. T. Denton and Son (Southbridge) and N. White 'Cashmere) sold pens at 30s Id, and P. H. Letham (Ashburton) gained 29s Id for a pen. Values were:— Extra prime young wethers, 62s Id to 68s Id. BULLS The bull entry was slightly larger with about 38 being penned, compared with 29 last week, but there were no high prices and the offering was mostly small to medium and rough quality types. There was fairly limited competition. For the heavier class of bull the demand was better but there was little inquiry for the rest. The heaviest bulls made from £53 to £66 17s 6d, with medium at £4l to £52 10s, light and service bulls at £2l 2s 6d to £36 7s 6d, and cull types down to £l3 7s 6d. DAIRY CATTLE The bulk of the dairy cattle entry of about 42 was made up of Friesian heifers of mixed quality and demand was not as consistent as last week. Values for the most part were easier by up to 50s a head and, in some cases, more. In spite of the reduced competition there was an almost total clearance under ihe hammer. best of the heifers, made from £4O to £4B, with medium at £33 to £39, and others down to £37. The few cows offered were of a serviceable type and the best of the second, third and fourth calvers made from £36 to £45, with the balance selling down to £2B.

There was a E fufi E yfrding of veal of mixed quality, which was largely made up of sucker types of only average standard, and only a few pens of prime large suckers came forward. A large number of only ordinary quality calves formed a tall end to the market. The sale opened on a quiet note with values easier by up to 20s a head and this tone was maintained throughout until the end when a further easing occurred. However, the large runner class sold well In sjropMby with the smaller fat cattle yarding and better prime beef prices.
