CHURCH HALL IN SHIRLEY

New Building For St. Stephen’s

The foundation stone for a £5OOO church and hall in St. Stephen’s parish, at the corner of Hills road and Westminster street, Shirley, will be laid on Sunday by the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren).

At present there are so many children in the Sunday school and Bible class that groups are meeting in the vicarage and in private homes, as well as in the old hall, moved some years ago from the corner of Hills road and Warden street to the Shirley road-Emmett street corner.

The new building will be of brick with a steel frame. A sanctuary, with a glass brick cross let into the wall, will be cut off by sliding doors when the hall is wanted for social functions. The wall at the west end will be of temporary wooden construction so that the building may in future be extended.
