Big Border Battle

ALGIERS, March >. French troops and Algerian nationalist rebels am locked in a major frontier battle near the electrified belt near the Tunisian border. French headquarters for Algeria said last night that the battle began on Sunday night when a rebel unit attempting to crew from Tunisia to Algeria was detected and attacked near Souk Ahras.

The Army said French troops aided by aircraft were pushing beyond the electrified barrier towards the Tunisian frontier. The Army said a total at M rebels had been put out of actfap during the engagement so far ard 72 arms were seized, including six machine-guns. French losses were described as four killed and one wounded. Algerian rebels have lost 854 dead or wounded in the last week, French military beadquarters in Algiers announced.
