STRIKE IN CEYLON

Troops Called Out

(Rec. 11.30 p.m.) COLOMBO, March 3. Armed troops and police mounted guard at key points in Ceylon as a one-day strike of a million workers began today. The men, belonging to 10 leading trade unions, are protesting against new security powers introduced by the Government. Reservists and volunteers have been mobilised by the Government. Public meetings and processions have been banned until Wednesday morning under a state of emergency declared last May after serious race riots. All public bars and taverns are closed today. The strike did not start as successfully as the unions hoped. Central and suburban train services were running, buses ran in convoys with armed escorts power supplies were maintained and the mails were distributed.

Colombo’s port was virtually dead. But the rest of the city had a tempo just a little lower than a normal week-day.
