RIGHT-HAND RULE

Decision May Go To Appeal

I New Zealand Press Association! WELLINGTON, March 3. The Crown has offered to sponsor an action in the Court of Appeal to contest the recent ruling of Mr Justice Haslam in the Supreme Court on the righthand rule. His Honour interpreted a recent redrafting of the Traffic Regulations to mean that a motorist must give way to his right, irrespective of whether the vehicle on his right is turning, and found for the defendant in a prosecution brought by a Lower Hutt city traffic inspector. The Minister of Transport (Mr Mathison) has announced that after consideration of the judgment by the Crown Law Office he has written to the Mayor of Lower Hutt (Mr P. Dowse) inviting him to lodge an appeal to the Court of Appeal and offering to reimburse the Lower Hutt City Council for the costs of the action.

Mr Mathison said that if the offer was accepted the case would be conducted in the Court of Appeal by the Crown Law Office.
