LAWN TENNIS Three Country Teams Win Games With Town

Teams from the six Canterbury lawn tennis sub-associations again had their share of success against teams from Christchurch on the annual town-country day held at Wilding Park on Saturday. For the last three years country teams have won three of the six matches and this was the case again. Mid-Canterbury won by 17 matches to 7, North Canterbury by 13 matches to 11, and Melvern narrowly, by 22 sets to 18, after it and its town opponent had both scored 12 matches. Town teams beat Ellesmere by 13 matches to 11, Hurunui by 15 matches to 9, and Banks Peninsula, by 13 matches to 11. North Canterbury and Malvern have now won their matches three years in succession. In the contests for juniors, country teams won three of the five matches. Mid-Canterbury, Malvern and North Canterbury won and Banks Peninsula and

Hunmui lost. Only a few of the leading 1 Christchurch senior players took ; part but in spite of that there ■ were some very creditable per- ; formances by country players. The present sub-associations ' singles champion, K. Familton, of Mid-Canterbury, fought hard against W. Pritchard, who until recently was top of the Canterbury provincial ladder. Pritchard won, 9-6, but he was often troubled by Familton’s pacy service and ground strokes. Notable wins for country were by W. Hewitt (Malvern), who beat the Canterbury under 17 singles champion and national runner-up, B. Judge, 9-7. ABrowne (Mid-Canterbury), who beat the Opawa player, S. Clarke, 9-7, W. G.
