Mayneen qualified for the 1959 New Zealand Cup with a sterling effort .to win the Carnival Handicap, main race and first leg of the double at Hutt Park on Saturday, when the Wellington Trotting Club concluded its festival meeting. After her win in the Festival of Wellington Cup dh the first day, the Templeton-trained mare was handicapped on 24 yards for the 13-furlong journey. ■ Forced back on the inside at a crucial stage and late working i clear lit the straight, she showed courage to finish brilliantly over * the last furlong and win going ' away by a length and a half. Scottish Command, Mighty Loyal, and Silent Scot broke at the start of the Carnival Handicap, and Auditor was slow to fill his hopples. Light Call led out and at the mile was clear of his stable-mate, vesta, with Reason Why trailing. Electric Ring and En Avant next. Mayneen, which had made a food beginning, was next Inside Monterey, then Auditor and Friendly Smile. Dannlel’a Pride, Scottish Command, Silent Scot and Mighty Loyal. At the mile he was 12 lengths dear, and passing the stands with six furlongs to travel he held an advantage of eight lengths over Wakeful, which was racing outside Marauder, with Care and Captain Spider next, ahead of Noble Bob and Gay Tune. Gentle Anna and Legislate. Dan’s Cobber, and Pukepoto, Bugle Call, and Rex Belwin. Wakeful was two lengths from Van Ardee at the half mile, and joined him at toe three. Captain Spider sprinted up to this pair on the home turn and was in between them straightening up for toe run in, with Gay Tune, Gentle Anna, and Legislate most prominent of the others. Wakeful, which had put tn a skip on the home turn, and was not trotting too smoothly, managed to keep to her gait well enough to hold off Captain Spider and win by half a head. Three parts of a length away. Gay Tune finished strongly into third. Legislate, another solid finisher, was elose up, fourth, well clear of Gentle Anna, which led in Van Ardee, Pukepoto, Care, Bugle Call, Noble Bob. Dan’s Cobber, and Rex Belwin. Marauder waa pulled up after striking interference. Wellington Stakes Handy throughout the Wellington Stakes, the Morrinsvtile three-year-old, Glad Marie (Intangible—lndian Summer) joined Dinnaken on toe home turn and ran the race out strongly to win by a length from Awaru>
