RAM FAIR AT WAIMATE
(From Our Own Reporter) WAIMATE. March 1. Top price at the Walmate ram fair was SSgne. obtained for a Border Leicester rams sold on account ot J. Caird, of Pareora. The entry of Border Leicester* was not UP to the usual high standard ot the Walmate sales, and blddlng began at a low level. Prices Increased mid-way through the wiling by up to Sgns and the remainder ot the offering sold under animated competition. Other sales ot good rams were 23gns paid to_the estate of A. W. Barnett, and W. L. McKenzie received Mgns to 19gns. An outstanding Southdown sold on account J. C. Meddllcott and Son realised 33gna. Quality sheep ranged from ISgna to SOgns. and it was perhaps the best all-round sale of Southdowns In South Canterbury this year. The Romney section was over supplied, and there was a dragging sale although the bulk at the offering changed hands. Price* averaged tens to ISgns. A feature ot thia *eauon was the sale ot a single rem <m account of Ronald Oakley tor Sign*. This was an exceptionally line animal, well wooUed and at very good information- . • ss>, A Suffolk stud ram sold for Alan Grant made SSgn*. In general thia breed realised from 14 to ITgna. South Suffolk* realised from Sgns to ISgns, the top Price going to a rem ot good quality offered on behalf of N. CroWe. ■ • Over the sale, the demand tor the mutton breed* was reasonably buoyant, but values were much lower than last year. Price* were, 11 anything, slightly advanced on the recent Timaru sales. Prices lor unregistered sheep ranged from Sgns to ISgns.
