RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY

The Way of the Cross. By William Manson. Hodder and Stoughton. 91 pp. The five studies published in this book are based on Holy Week Addresses delivered, by the late Professor William Nfcnson in St. Giles’ Cathedral, Edinburgh, in 1957. The titles of each chapter are as follows: The Coming of Jesus Christ; Fellowship with Christ; Sacramental Life; O AllAtoning Sacrifice. Preachers in particular, and indeed layfolks as well will find much in the devotional treatment of the Passion narrative by a well-known Biblical scholar to interest them; e.g, of the Saviour’s cry of dereliction, Dr. Manson says, “Losing God to find man, yet not really losing God, but finding Him in the very act of finding man, and bringing God and man together in Himself!” A certain pathos attaches to this little book. The author died on Good Friday. 1958. Healing Words. By Christopher Woodard. Max Parish. 162 pp. Dr. Woodard presents in this book an anthology for the sick and those in distress. The book is divided into twelve parts, one for each month in the year. The extracts are taken from the Bible, philosophers, novelists, mystics and poets, and every reader will find something that will help him.
