STORMLEA MAY TAKE WELLINGTON STAKES

Stormlea, which appeared unlucky not to finish closer than fifth fn the Air Force Handicap last week, is expected to make amends when she contests the Wellington Stakes on the concluding day of the Wellington Trotting Club’s summer meeting today. The Wellington Stakes, in which special penalties apply, is restricted to three and four-year-old pacers. Stormlea, a filly with one win to her credit, will start from 12 yards.

In the Air Force Handicap on the opening day,' Stormlea received a favoured run on the inner until the straight but became cramped for racing room in the run home and did not work clear until the race was virtually over. Stormlea was an impressive winner at Hororata last month at her previous start. With average luck in the running today she should be the hardest to beat.

The other 11 runners in the field have alternative engagements. If this race is chosen for Glad Marie, instead of the Carterton Handicap, which is the next event on the programme, it is likely that she will be Stormlea’s strongest rival.' Glad Marie has been racing well for minor places

in recent starts, her latest being in the Air Force Handicap last week.

Dinaken, Hindu Princess, Space King and Teryman were also minor place-getters on the opening day which are expected to race well again. However, they will get the opportunity to reveal their form earlier in the day for Teryman is engaged in the Wairarapa Handicap and the other three are acceptors for the Navy Handicap. A strong field will contest the first leg of the double, the Carnival Handicap. If she receives a favourabe run, Mayneen, the Festival Cup winner last Saturday, is again expected to prevail. The second leg is on ihe principal event for trotters, the Manawatu Handicap. Form disclosed in the corresponding race on the first day should be a reliable guide. The dividend payers then were Noble Bob, Gentle Anna and Captain Spider. Fencourt Lad has been withdrawn from the Manawatu Handicap and On Side, Cruising Dell and Ebonite will be missing from the City Handicap. The forecast for tomorrow is for fair weather and the track will be in good order again.
