Somerset Fair Sought "The Press" Special Service INVERCARGILL, Feb. 27. Bought at auction at Trentham last month by Mr A. J. Lawton for his Hampton Lodge Stud, Invercargill, the seven-year-old Fair’s Fair stallion, Somerset Fair, may not do stud duty in New Zealand. A substantial offer has been made by American Interests for Somerset Fair, and if present negotiations are completed he will go to California to do stud duty at Los Angeles. The sale is contingent on a licence being secured to import an English horse for the Hampton Lodge Stud to replace Somerset Fair, which was to do his first stud season next spring. Somerset Fair was one of New Zealand’s greatest gallopers of recent years, and at his peak was invincible in- wefght-for-age events. In five seasons of racing he won 28 races and £35,975 in stakes. He was successful from six furlongs to a mile and a half, winning 23 races In New Zealand and five in Australia. As a three-year-old he won 10 races in successive starts, and at five won seven on end. ' Somerset Fair was bought as a yearling for 350gns. and he was secured last month at auction at the Trentham Sales by Mr Lawton for BOOgns as a sire. His sale to America is expected to be finalised in the next few days. JOCKEY INJURED (New Zeaiana Press Association) WANGANUI, February 27. D. Grubb, a jockey, of Wanganui, was this morning taken to hospital unconscious after a horse rolled on him in a suburban street. He was later reported to be comfortable.
