SCHOLARSHIPS TO UNIVERSITY
Criticisms Claimed “Misleading”
Recent criticisms, from Auckland on the award of University Entrance scholarships are misleading to those who do not know the facts, according to a supplied statement to “The Press” from Mr E. Caradus, acting vicenrineipal of Scots College, Wellington. The criticisms altogether ignore the fact that more than twice as many scholarship candidates oiler the mathematics and science group of subjects than offer the language group, says the statement. “The scholarship list, distributed to principals of schools and to candidates shows for last year (the year obviously referred to) the following figures for candidates offering the subjects upon which a comparison was made:— “In the language group the numbers of candidates in the subjects usually taken were: Latin, 115: French, 174: history, 134—an average of 141 candidates in this group. Of these 17 obtained scholarships or approximately one in eight of those who took language subjects.
“In the mathematics and science group the numbers were: mathematics, 371; chemistry, 343; physics, 313; add. mathematics. 200— an average of 307 candidates In this group. Of these 27 obtained scholarships or approximately one in 12 of those who took mathematics and science subjects. “It is clear that no injustice Is done to. the language candidates. Two scholarship winners could not be placed definitely in either group. In language mathematics and science the median marks of the successful scholarship winners differed little,’-’ says the statement
