Rooming-In
Sir, —It is encouraging to read that mothers at the new Cashmere Hospital may be able to choose whether or not to have rooming-in. This' choice has not always been available at St Helens Hospital and the numbers i asking for or practising roomingin there have naturally been small. They are not necessarily a guide to the numbers wanting | rooming-in in the future. Mothers i of first babies accept whatever is , the usual system; until now the . nursery has been taken for i granted. More experienced or . more enlightened mothers have often been refused permission to ' room-in at St Helens Hospital ' and they have avoided the hospital for that reason. Our public hospitals Should lead by helping mothers to choose the best methods of child care. It will be a great step forward when some thought is given to the downright cruelty Involved in separating the mother and the new baby.—Yours, etc., MARY WOODWARD. February 26, 1959.
