Sir, —Councillor Cowles now says “the £7OOO he referred to was taxpayers’ money, and in this he was near the actual figure. The Government had added a subsidy.’’ However, many persons present will vouch for the accuracy of the following paragraph, appearing in a newspaper report, of the public meeting held in Sumner last year. 4‘ln answer to questions, Councillor Cowles: The wall would cost £7OOO and the Government would pay half of that?’ He also denies saying that “the wall was not for protection of property.’’ Yet those at the meeting will remember his saying, “Only in the last 48 hours have I learned that the wall was being built for protection.” £16,059 squandered on an unnecessarily high wall. Even Mr Somers, city engineer, said, “The height of the wall was a matter of opinion rather than fact.’’—Yours, etc., D. E. SMITH. February 4, 1959.
