“Humiliating”

Members of the Christchurch Drainage Board' were last evening warned off joining New Zealand Institution of Engineers conference delegates in a visit to the sewage treatment works. The chairman of the construction committee (Mr R. C. Neville) said that' all the people there would be engineers, and that any members present would be liable to be asked technical questions about the plant. This, he felt, “could be humiliating.” “Genuine Genuine” The most common question, asked by children in the museum was “Is it real?” said Mr H. W. Beaumont, former educational officer at the Canterbury Museum, to the Association of Friends of the Museum last evening. One small boy had asked him, on seeing the Egyptian mummy, “Is it real Or a genuine fake?” "It’s a genuine genuine—there’s a real woman in there/* Mr Beaumont replied. Later the boy had said to a disbelieving friend that there was a "real woman in there.” “There must be—she’s kicked the sticking plaster pff her heel,” said the boy in defence.

Cucumber Glut Cucumbers, in exceptionally heavy supply, are glutting the Christchurch produce markets at present. Because of this they are selling at what is believed to be the lowest prices for 'many years. Yesterday cucumbers sold for Is 6d to 2s a case (each containing about two dozen). Tomatoes, also in large quantities, were felling cheaply, with the Nelson variety priced from 7s 6d to 10s a case, and locally grown tomatoes from 4d to lOd per lb. There was a good demand for the sauce and chutney variety. , Good Oyster Catch After a delay caused by price negotiations between merchants and oystermen, the new season for oysters opened well yesterday. Eleven boats left Bluff for the Foveaux Strait oyster beds early in the morning and returned with about, 800,000 oysters. Oystermen reported the catch to be of excellent quality, and said the oysters seemed to be as numerous as ever. Proprietors of Invercargill fish and chip shops reported a good demand, and confirmed the claim about the quality of the oysters.— (PA) Juvenile Crime Juvenile "delinquency prevention sections would be operating in the four main centres within the next fortnight, the Commissioner of P6lice (Mr W. S. Brown) said in Wellington yesterday. The Minister of Police (Mr Connolly) recently announced that the department would expand the scheme originally experimented with in Christchureh last year. Initially three men would be~ employed on this work in Auckland, two each in Wellington and Christchurch, and one in Dunedin. The scheme would later be extended to other centres.—(P.A.) Librarians’ Pay "As for pay, all librarians with good educational backgrounds, sound professional training, and of proved competence get rewards that are not only nonprofessional but are unworthy,” said Mr F. A. Sandall in his presidential address to the annual conference of the New Zealand Library Association last night. "Recently in Australia I asked why no-one there applied for a senior position advertised here.

I was told that an untrained graduate entering library work as a cadet could get as much as we offered for a graduate with professional training and at least five years’ experience.’’— (PA.)
