Th« United States Coastguard icebreaker, Northwind, will be assisted by two other American icebreakers—the Glacier arid the Edisto—if she Is unable to rescue the British polar ship, John Biscoe, from the pack iee near Jour British bases on Grahamland Peninsula.
Rear-Admiral George J. Dufek, the United States Antarctic expedition commander, yesterday advised the Northwind to repprt, when known, whether she can complete the mission without help from the two other Icebreakers. The Edisto, having transferred fuel to the Glacier, and a helicopter to replace the one lost in a crash, is now on her way to Buenos Aires, in South America.
The Glacier was scheduled to have arrived at the Belgian Antarctic station at Breid Bay yesterday. She is carrying passengers and supplies* from the Belgian polar supply ship. Polarbav, for the station. The Polarhav is staying In open water away from the ice-surrounded Belgian station.
