Nasser May Protest
(N.Z. Prtts Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) LONDON, February 17. President Nasser is rallying the Arab- States in a concerted protest to Washington and Moscow at the "greatest menace of all” the stepped-up migration of Jews from Eastern Europe to Israel, according to the “News Chronicle" in a dispatch from Cairo.
Cairo’s' newspapers had suddenly begun competing against each other in denunciation of "this diabolical' Zionist plot” to boost Israel’s population to three million, the "News Chronicle" said.
The newspaper “Al Ahram" said that Arab ambassadors in Washington and Moscow were to ask the American and Soviet leaders to “stem the tide of Jewish emigration from Eastern Europe to Israel.”
President Eisenhower would be asked to stop American financial contributions while Mr Khrushchev would be asked to reaffirm Russia's friendship for the Arabs and to stop the emigration of Jews.
Israel had been caught napping by Rumania’s sudden lifting of the Iron Curtain and the letting out of her Jews, the Israeli correspondent of the “News Chronicle” said.
There was chaos in organising ways to absorb them all and in finding funds to meet the staggering qost. Israeli Cabinet Ministers and other leaden were flying to all parts of the world to try to persuade world Jewry to double or treble contributions to meet the emergency. Israelis were largely unmoved by Egyptian press criticism of the migration from East Europe to Israel, the Jerusalem correspondent of “The Times” said. Their attitude could be summed up as being that immigration was their own business and that if the Arabs had made Jewish immigration into a bogy Which they now feared, the remedy lay in their own hands—let them recognise Israel and come to terms with her. The Dirdctor-Geheral of the Israel Foreign Ministry. Mr Eytan, said it was “sheer nonsense” to describe’ immigration' into Israel aS “aggressive.” ’■ A"' : A.
