CARPENTERS’ UNION
Auckland Rejoins N.Z. Body (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 16. A breach in the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union that occurred in 1949 has been repaired. The Auckland Carpenters’ Union has rejoined the New Zealand union. In 1949 the former Labour Government deregistered the Auckland branch of the New Zealand Carpenters’ Union, and a new official union was formed. With the passing of the years and change of personnel it has been possible to bring the comparatively new Auckland union back into the national organisation. The absorption of the Auckland union brings 4000 members into the New Zealand union, raising its membership to about 15,000. Signatures of a majority of the members of the Auckland union had to be obtained to show the Registrar of Unions that they desired the change. The Auckland carpenters have been covered by the New Zealand award since 1057. MINOR FIRES No damage was caused by a chimney fire at the home of Mr E Ferguson, 369 Blenheim road, about 10 am. yesterday. One unit from Sockburn • attended. A unit from Sydenham and one from Central attended a grass fire in Centaurus road, Cashmere, about 12.30 pm. There vaa ao dazhage.
