RESCUE FROM SURF

Prompt Action By Patrol

Just before the start of the last event of the Canterbury surf championships, held at Taylor’s Mistake yesterday, a young man got into difficulties in the heavy surf and was rescued bv patrolling members of the Taylor’s Mis-, take Surf Club. Competitors in the senior beach relay were lined up waiting . for the starter’s gun Suddenly there was a call for help by the patrolling members, and at least onethird of the competitors went to the aid of. the man in trouble Two surf canoes which were beached were manned by some of the competitors, who paddled them towards the drifting tnan. Before the canoes could reach the man. lan MacDonald, one of the official patrolmen, had the rescue under control. ■ The alarm was given bv Peter *strad. the host club’s captain. Mr Stead swam out to the man who was about 150 yards off-shorg. and was being buffeted by big waves A friend of the man was trying to support him, but he was exhausted, and Mr Stead took over. _ Mr MacDonald used the surf rescue belt, and he was able to hold the man while other members hauled him in The man, a little shocked, suffered no illeffects and soon recovered. As it was a carnival day. there was a large crowd at the beach. AV the first sign of a rescue manv gathered round the surf reel, and at one stage threatened to impede the work of the surfers. An announcement over, the loudspeaker soon broke up the crowd. Earlier in the afternoon the patrol members rescued a small boy on an inflated mattress. He was being carried out to sea when he was spotted and' brought ashore by the patrol. The rescue of the man was the fourth major one at Taylor’S Mistake this season.
