WELLINGTON, February 15 Canterbury lost, 19 to four, against the strong Wellington team in the annual lawn tennis match Saturday* 1 ® WeU ‘ Worn Central Park courts? on
Canterbury had half its wins in the women’s singles when Miss Diane Souter showed a further advance in her game by beating Mrs E. Wentzel «r h n l! L W ® U - kn ? wn a stumbling block for aspiring Wellington junior players. Miss Souter impressed with her fluent driving and determination P “
From the determined top man, A D. L- Hunter, who held four set points in the first set against J R McDonald, to the sixth mixed doubles pair, W. Thom and Miss K. Williams, Canterbury had a team of keen and energetic performers Miss B. Mollison hammered the ball down the backhand line efficiently to beat Miss J. Archibald 3-6, 6-0, 6-2. Miss L Mardon had cause to be satisfied for her display against Miss D. King, while her own and Miss D. Norrie’s effort in taking Miss King and Miss E. Meyer to three sets was good. Miss Souter also figured in victory when she and Miss Smith, who had had an interesting encounter with Miss F. Cliff in the singles, beat Mrs Wentzel and Miss Cliff. The young Canterbury players won 9-7, 4-6, 6-0. Although statistically Canterbury's men players were not so successful, they had some stirring matches. Hunter made McDonald concentrate fully when he lost 8-6, 6-2, and C. W. Pritchard had Souter supporters worried when he took the first set 6-4.
Souter found the accurate game played by Pritchard hard to handle on the slow but true court. A. L. Blackwell had two long sets with R. G. Clarke, having a set point in the second set.
