Yachting LEANDER TROPHY

G. Mander Wins Series (New Zealand press Association! AUCKLAND, February 15. The Leander Trophy, aymbol of premiership in the national R class yachting, • will very soon be shifted from one Christchurch mantelpiece to another, but it will still remain in the Mander family. During the week-end G. S. Mander sailed brilliantly for two wins and won the trophy from his brother, P. G. Mander. Graham Mander, who had J. U. Cropp as forward hand, also scored a second in the first race on Friday ana enaed with 266.66 ’ points. Peter Mander, with his younger brother, David, scored 233.32, and C. E. Papps and D. Sutherland, with three thirds, trailed the Manders with 150 points All are from Christchurch.

These three crews dominated the contest and proviaed a fine, display of excellent sailing, particularly in the several beats to windward. Strangely enough, the second and third races over the week-end were very similar in pattern. In each case Papps somehow managed to start best, in the crowded fl€et, but the Manders soon joined battle with him. DUring the first slog on Saturday Peter Mander led for a while, but Graham overhauled him and won by 20sec.

In the third race Graham Mander took the lead for the first beat, lost the advantage momentarily to Papps, regained #, and cleared away for a most convincing win. The “big three’’ overshadowed the rest of the competitors, but there was still some very fine sailing from F. Simpson and B. Wattman (Christchurch) for two fourths in the last two races, while Restive (R. Berry z Wellington). kept close enough to the leaders to win the Handicap Cup. Results:— The leading points scorers were:— G. Mander, 266.66; P. G. Mander, 233.32; E. E. Papp<s, 150; F. Simpson (Christchurch). 100; R. Berry (Wellington), 93.33. COLOMBO STREET 'BRIDGE Work On Services Duct Begins Work on the construction ot the services duct which will be part of the Colombo street o erhead bridge has been started by the contractor. C. S. Luney, Ltd., according to the City, Engineer (Mr E. Somers). The duct, which will cost about £lB.OOO. will carry services such as power cables, telephone cables and water and aewer pipes. Mr Somers said the tender for the construction of the overhead bridge, which has been let to Wilkins end Davies Construction Company. Ltd., would require a lot of preliminary work to be done before work starts on the site. •/
