Castro Now Prime Minister Of Cuba
HAVANA, February 14. The Cuban revolutionary leader, Dr. Fidel Castro, is to become the country’s Prime Minister on Monday. Dr. Castro’s dramatic emergence into the turbulent Cuban political scene from his post as Chief of the Armed Forces is interpreted by foreign observers as his first step toward the Presidency. Dr. Castro’s new post became known late yesterday when the Cuban revolutionary Cabinet, headed by the Prime Minister (Mr Jose Miro Cardona), suddenly resigned. T Mr Cardona sent his resignation to the provisional President, Dr. Manuel Urrutia, who promptly accepted it. Repqrts of differences between the two. men began circulating in Havana soon after Mr Cardona took office on January 5. Constitutional changes recently
lowered the age requirement for the Presidency from 35 to 30. making Dr. Castro eligible for the post. He said last night that he wanted to wait until Monday to begin his new job In the meantime, he would I appoint his successor as Army Commander-in-Chief. It was generally expected that this would be Dr. Castro’s 27-year-old brother, Raul, who is now second in command of the armed forces. Tip For Travellers Always pack a oottie oi Baxter.
