(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. February 13.
Parents who savagely beat helpless children would be punished by prison, said Mr M. C. Astley, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court 'at Auckland today, when he sentenced Mary Girlie Kapa, aged 27, to three months’ imprisonment for assaulting her six-year-old daughter. Last we6k Kapa admitted the charge. The Magistrate said the assault on the child was a “wild outburst of wicked temper.” The child had broken a door handle while her mother was out —a trivial enough act. On returning home accused had severely beaten the child with a stick an inch wide, causing lacerations and extensive bruising.
