SYDNEY-MELBOURNE RAIL LINK
Standard Gauge Planned
A standard gauge railway line linking Sydney and Melbourne, which will be completed in 1961, will reduce travelling time between the cities by two hours, Says the latest issue of ’’Austraa brochure prepared by the Australian National Travel Association. Completion of the work saves passengers from having to change trains at the terminus of the two railway gauges at Albury, and is also expected to save about £500,000 a year in transhipment of freight at Albury, which is necessary at present because of the 'different gauges. Damage to goods in hand'* ling will also be reduced, and improved timetables are expected to result from the change-over, the brochure says. Modern high-speed express trains will cover the 580 miles between the two cities in 12} hours instead of the present journey of 14} hours. The standard gauge project involves the construction of a single 4ft B}in line from Melbourne to Albury through Mangalore. Victoria has a sft 31n gauge line at present, and New South Wales a 4ft 8} in gauge.
