BIG STAKE WINNERS

53 Have Topped

£20,000

Fair Chance entered a select group of racehorses when he won the Wellington Racing Club Handicap at Trentham last month. The £2440 stake advjmced the Fair’s Fair gelding’s winnings to £33,012 and placed him 13th on the list of New Zealand-bred stake-winners.

Seventeen New Zealand horses besides Fair Chance have won more than £30,000. Only three of them —Tulloch, Fair Chance and Straight Draw—are still racing. Tulloch, although he has raced only as a two and three-year-old, has won £65,973 10s. Only Redcraze (32 wins) Rising Fast (24 wins) and Phar Lap have earned more.

Although the list of New Zea-land-bred winners of more than £20,000 contains 53 names, several of the Dominion's greatest horses are not on it.

Kindergarten won the Auckland Cup, Great Northern Derby and St Leger, Canterbury Cup (twice), North Island Challenge Stakes (three times), New Zealand St. Leger and the Wellington Cup, but earned only £16,105. Kindergarten raced during the war years, when racing was curtailed. He had no opportunity to contest the rich weight-for-age races across the Tasman in Australia.

Defaulter, one of New Zealand’s best colonial sires, is another champion missing from the list. Defaulter raced just after the depression, when stakes were at their lowest. He won 22 times, from four furlongs to two miles and a quarter, and was unbeaten at weight-for-age. As a three-year-old, he effortlessly won the Wellington Cup with 111 b above weight-for-age. - One of the most amazing totals is that bi Carbine. Racing 79 years ago, when stakes were a fraction of their present value. Carbine won 33 times and amassed £29,626. In 1890 he carried 10-s—a record which still stands —to win the Melbourne Cup in a time that was unbeaten for many years.

Carbine was sold to stud in England when he finished his racing career. Bargain Horse

One of the best bargains among the big winners was Gloaming. He was not strictly a New Zealand horse—he was bred in Australia, where Mr G. D. Greenwood bought him for 230gns. as a yearling. From 67 starts—none of them in a handicap—he won 59 times. He had two long winning sequences, one of 18 and the other of 15 races, and was unplaced only once, when he fell at the start of the North Island Challenge Stakes as a three-year-old. Gloaming won £43,100 and proved himself a remarkably durable galloper. Even as a 10-year-old he was unbeaten from five starts. His record of 45 seconds for half a mile still stands.
