BRITISH MOBILE OIL-DRILLING PLATFORM—The first British-built mobile oil-drilling platform photographed during a demonstration at Southampton. It will soon leave Britain on a 9200-mile tow to drill for oil in the bed of the South China Sea. Named the Orient Explorer, the platform was designed in the United States, and has cost nearly £1,000,000. It has four retractable legs, each 235 ft long and 10ft in diameter. These can be lowered to the sea bed, when a drilling site is reached, and by powerful hydraulic mechanism the platform climbs up on its own legs to clear the action of the waves. The drilling rig has a maximum range of 12,000 ft.
