U.K. DEFENCE COMMAND

Mountbatten’s Powers

(Rec. 11 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 12. The power and responsibility of Lord Mountbatten, the supremo-designate, are to be greatly increased as a result of a statement in the British Defence White Paper, according to Chapman Fincher, of the “Daily Express.” The decision to set up a unified Navy-Army-R.A.F. Command in the Mediterranean, and probably in the Far East means that operational control of all “limited” war commitments will come firmly under Lord Mountbatten. Pincher says. The command chiefs will oe “on-the-spot” representatives of Lord Mountbatten and the Defence Minister. Mr Duncan Sandys.

If this system works well, the principle of unified commands reporting directly to the Defence Ministry may be extended to Home Commands, perhaps during the three years that Lord Mountbatten is expected to remain supremo.
