MAKARIOS AGREES
“Opens New Era” (Bee. 10 p.m.) ATHENS, Feb. 12. Archbishop Makarios, who was exiled from Cyprus nearly three years ago. last night gave his official backing to the Greek-Turkish agreement on Cyprus, saying that, given goodwill and understanding, it would open up a new era of freedom and prosperity for the island. According to political quarters in Nicosia, the Governor of Cyprus (Sir Hugh Foot) may go to London soon to discuss the agreement and the timing of the return of Archbishop Makarios Archbishop Makarius, who said the agreement laid the basis of an immediate and final solution for Cyprus, was speaking after a twohour conference in Athens with the Greek Piime Minister (Mr Constantine Karamanlis), who is just back from initialling the agreement in Zurich Later the Greek Government announced that Mr Karamanlis and Mr Adnan Menderes, the Turkish Premier, had agreed that, after making contact with Britain. they would give their Parliaments details of the Zurich agreement on the same day. and as soon as possible. It was officially confirmed m Nicosia last night that special branch men raided* the Archbishop’s palace in Nicosia at dawn yesterday in an anti-Eoka swoop, the American Associated Press reported The security men searched for wanted Eoka extremists and screened local residents Nothing was found “First President” (Rec. 12.10 a.m.) NICOSIA. February 12 The English-language new?eaper, “Times of Cyprus," pubshed a large photograph today bi the exiled Archbishop Makatios and captioned it: "The First President." The British-owned newspaper, which headlined * its report of the proposed Turkish-Greek Agreement on the future of Cyprus with the proclamation, “A United Cyprus: We are on the fray," was the most enthusiastic the island’s newspapers.
