Papatawa Shows Form In Trial At Brighton

Papatawa and Waitaki Child, candidates tor the

Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s autumn meeting at Addington tomorrow, were moot impressive in their heats of the free-for-all at trials ran at New Brighton yesterday by the Canterbury Trotting Owners* and Breeders’ Association.

The trials were held in beautiful weather and the track was fast. New Brighton missed all the rain which fell in the city in the morning. Gold Cloud raced just in behind the leaders foe most of the first beat of the free-for-all and she finished on well to win by a head after taking 3mln U 2-seeh for tne mile and a half, the last half-mile in Imin 3 3-ssec Gold Cloud is a candidate for the Otley Handicap and may show to advantage.

Highland Heath was never far from the pacemaker. Auditor, in about fifth position and be ran on well for second, a length in front of Papatawa, which looked to have a lot in reserve at the finish. , Papatawa was a good way back most of the day and he put in a strong run wide out in the straight. That effort gives him more than an outside chance in the President's Handicap, .the first leg of the double at Addington.

Achates, after being in second place all the way. was not knocked about to hold fourth place, just behind Papatawa. It was a sound effort for a horse in his class. Zany was full 01 running in fifth place, with Coincident. Battle Fling, Spring Chat and Auditor following. Waitaki Child Wins

Waitaki Child recorded what could be a winning trial for the Wigram Handicap, the second leg of the double, when he won the second heat of the free-for-all He raced close to the lead all the way 'and -'ran out the last, furlong too solidly for the others after taking tain 16 2-ssec for the mile.and a half, the last halfmile in Imin 4 2-ssec.

Red Monarch was one of the leading three all the way and he was not troubled to hold second place a length and a half behind Waitaki Child, with a similar distance back to Our Tim. which finishell strongly from the middle of the field over the final furlong. Our Tim looks to be on the verge of worthwhile form. East Dome, after losing a big stretch of ground at the start, showed speed to be handy at the half-mile. He was second at the straight entrance, but tired a little to fourth. He will only have to begin smoothly, to be an early winner. East Dome was followed in by Gay Cobra. Thunder and Arnhem. Bobby Brigade, Thunder and Ben Lee met trouble near the three furlongs.

' Lord Mackworth, which started from 24 yards, showed speed to win the 3min 29sec class pace He improved quickly and was not far away over the last mile. He took 3min 21 l-ssec for the distance, the last half-mile tn Imin 5 3-ssec. Lord Mackworth beat Mendip Song, another backmarker, by half a length, with three lengths to Fernleaf. Mighty Mina, which is now being trained by M Holmes, was under a hold in fourth place, with Fame, Super Attack and Brittania following. Foam, a member of J. G. McDonald's team, won the first heat of the 3min 37sec class trot m 3min 29sec- Hey There made up ground for second, ahead of Welburn, Nigeria and Ahumal. The last-named gave a ■ bold display of trotting and she may do bettor at this gait than she has as a Pacer Court Out's Win There was little pace on tor the first half-mile in the second heat, which was won by the three-year-old. Guiliano broke soon after the start and was well out of his ground early. He showed speed to-finish so close up. He is engaged in the Yaldhurst Handicap at Addington tomorrow. Lavengro finished strongly m the straight to win the first heat of the 3min 37sec class pace. He was never far away and raced clear in the straight. He beat Kilkerry by a length, with a similar distance back to Or Not, which showed speed after starting from 48 yards. True Guest was right up fourth, ahead of Trickster and Takitimu. Lavengro took 3min 22 l-ssec tor the mile and a half, the last halfmile in Imin 5 4-ssec.

Hindu Princess set a very slow pace in the second heat, which was won by the backmarker, Medoro Star. The time for the mile and a half was 3min 26sec, the last half-mile taking Imin 4sec. Hindu Princess was a neck back in second place, a length in front of Black Abbess, with Wendy Charles, Two Bees, Lucks Way and Dust Up next. Gay Flame forced all the pace in the 3min 27sec class trot, but she was run down over the last furlong by Whirlwind, which finished strongly.
