Report From Light ® Aircraft i fl V (New Zea Lana Press Association! WELLINGTON, January 23. * Another report of a strong sul- j phurous smell on Mount Egmont came today from a man who flew a over the mountain in a light air- j craft on Wednesday. It was reported earlier that two d parties of climbers had noticed a c smell “as strong as Rotorua” on the northern side of the mountain, but the latest report was f from the Fantham’s Peak area, on the southern face. Two businessmen, Mr W. Foot, of Lower Hutt, and Mr F. Wood- j ward, of Auckland, encountered the smell as they passed over the Fantham’s Peak area about midday on Wednesday in a light cabin aircraft They were flying at about 6500 feet. “The cloud layer was about 5000 feet up,” said Mr Foot today. “We could just see the tip of Fantham’s Peak just below us,.P and we were about a mile from R the main cone of Egmont when v ’ both of us suddenly noticed this very strong smell. v “It was just like Rotorua. It E was so powerful that had there, been an inversion of air currents t it would have been noticeable at ground level.” iti They flew on around the west- b ern side- of the mountain and r back over the summit, but did not v notice the smell again. c Mr Foot was certain the smell r did not originate from the air--j craft itself. The cabin was closed, but the ventilators open. “It was v a distinct smell of sulphur,” he v said Two 4500-year-old settlements * have been discovered in Bulgaria 1 —among the ■ oldest ever found in 1 the country. The settlements s were found in the northern spurs * of the Rhodope mountains.—Bel- ' grade (Reuter). jl
