BICENTENARY OF BURNS
SCOTLAND’S POJET. —Scotsmen around the world will toast “The Immortal Memory” this year with the added impetus of a bicentenary; Robert Burns was born on January 25, 1759, at Alloway, Ayrshire. The portrait of Burns reproduced above is from Alexander Nasmyth’s work in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. The top picture shows Lincluden Abbey, one of the favourite haunts of the musing Robert Burns. On the Maxwellton side of the River Nith, little more than a mite’s stroll from Dumfries, stand the ruins of Lincluden Abbey, its foundations laid about 1164 by Uchtred, Lord of Galloway. The bottom picture shows the Cluden Water, close to its confluence with the Nith at Lincluden Abbey, parts of which are to be seen in the background. The Cluden Water was a place much frequented by Robert Burns, and students of Burns will remember it in the poetry. Photograph by ALASDAIR ALPIN MacGREGOR.
