World Tennis New Star
Since the playing of the 1958 Davis Cup Challenge Round in Brisbane, and the dramatic Victory of the United States team by 3 matches to 2, there has been much discussion as to the status of the Peruvian player, A. Olmedo, who practically won the trophy single-handed for the challengers. Olmedo is a Peruvian who is not a naturalised United States citizen. However, the rules of the contest say that a person is eligible to play for a country if he has been resident in that country for three years. He must, therefore, continue to represent that country only, except that he may play for the nation of his birth subsequently, if he has not played in the competition during the previous three years. Student Olmedo, who has not played at Wimbledon, is at present a student at the University of Southern California. He first went to the United States from Peru in 1951 to college, and he has been studying in that country ever since. He is now aged 22. He learnt his tennis at the Arequipa club in Peru, where his father is the caretaker. He is the current inter-collegiate champion. Olmedo has built a strong attack upon the sound basis of a solid defence. He has perfected the use of spin, which most modern players have neglected, and he can beat a player without the use of overwhelming power.
