Disarmament
Sir,—Recently I heard four professional men, two -of them scientists. state that, because of .nuclear weapons the only means of saving the world.from annihilation or_at the least widespread, and irreparable damage continuing through was inunerij* ate disarmament. In this situation can we justify military training in secondary schools? I believe such training is dishonest and educationally bad in that it perpetuates the outmoded belief that military defence is still possible in the present age and fosters national divisions and hatreds when the inculcation of a sense of human unity and world citizenship is the only means of saving mankind from disaster. Of course the military training is not compulsory and I suggest that boys entering secondary schools and their parents consider asking headmasters to make provision for the boys to undertake some activity that would help to promote world peace rather than participate in training for war.— Yours, etc., L. A. EiyORD. January 22, 1959.
