i Rec. 830 p.m.) BRISBANE. January 21. South-eastern Queensland has, missed the main force of a fierce cyclone sweeping down the Australian coast This afternoon the fast-moving cyclone changed course, after threatening to sweep directly on to Brisbane. Early tonight it was about 150 miles due east of Brisbane and was moving in a west-south-werterly direction at 22 miles an hour. The weather bureau expects the cyclone to reach the north eoast of New South Wales in the next six to 12 hours. The cyclone is still officially classed as severe and baa winds of up to 70 miles an hour. The cyclone has whipped' up heavy seas and al! shipping in its path has been alerted to “run for cover.’’. I-ate this afternoon heavy rain was falling on the New South Wales coast from Yamba to the Queensland border. Byron Bay. Ballina and the Mullumbimbi had up to Sin of rain and wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour.

The ocean jetty at Byron Bay is taking a terrific pounding and it is feared that one section of it is breaking up.
