CHURCHILL IN RUSSIA
“Asked For Decoration 99 (Rec. 11 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 21. Reminiscing aboard the train which brought him from Washington to New York yesterday, the Soviet First Deputy Premier (Mr Mikoyan) spoke of Sir Winston Churchill’s first visit to Moscow during World War 11. “He asked us,” said Mr Mikoyan, “why he had not been given the Order of Lenin for bls services to the Red Army. We were greatly surprised because he had been a great opponent of the revolution •’ and ’ had helped to organise the foreign intervention in Russia. “But Mr Churchill said thia waa how he had earned the decoration. ■I taught the Red Army how to fight,’ he told us, ‘and that is why you should give me the decoration.’ ” -■ K Mr Mikoyan said this waa just Sir Winston Churchill's way of making a joke, and added that the British war-time Prime Minister deserved a medal, but not tor the Intervention, CYCLONE IN AUSTRALIA Heavy Seas On , Coast
i Rec. 830 p.m.) BRISBANE. January 21. South-eastern Queensland has, missed the main force of a fierce cyclone sweeping down the Australian coast This afternoon the fast-moving cyclone changed course, after threatening to sweep directly on to Brisbane. Early tonight it was about 150 miles due east of Brisbane and was moving in a west-south-werterly direction at 22 miles an hour. The weather bureau expects the cyclone to reach the north eoast of New South Wales in the next six to 12 hours. The cyclone is still officially classed as severe and baa winds of up to 70 miles an hour. The cyclone has whipped' up heavy seas and al! shipping in its path has been alerted to “run for cover.’’. I-ate this afternoon heavy rain was falling on the New South Wales coast from Yamba to the Queensland border. Byron Bay. Ballina and the Mullumbimbi had up to Sin of rain and wind gusts of up to 50 miles an hour.
The ocean jetty at Byron Bay is taking a terrific pounding and it is feared that one section of it is breaking up.
