LAWN TENNIS NZ JUNIOR TITLES: FIRST MIXED DOUBLES SEED OUT

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, Jan. 21. The first major surprises in the New Zealand junior tennis championships at Central Park, Wellington, occurred today, when the top seeded pair in the under 19 mixed doubles, R. G. Clarke and Miss M. Johnston (Wellington) were beaten in the quarterfinals. Late in the afternoon Clarke and Miss Johnston, winners of the under 17 title two years ago, lost over three tense sets to the fifth-seed Auckland pair, A. Chester and Miss H. Lockington. The Auckland pair lost the first set, 2-6, but played consistently to win the second, 8-6. The third set produced real tournament tennis. Chester and Miss Lockington jumped to a 5-2 lead, but lost the next three games. Miss Johnston then dropped her service, and the Aucklanders went to 6-5, only to see the gap closed again. The Wellington pair had match point at 7-6, but Chester and Miss Lockington won the game, and went on to a 9-7 victory. \ Two seeded under 19 singles players were eliminated this morning when P. Dibley (Auckland) was beaten in three sets by G. Moss (Canterbury). Dibley was seeded sixth, and Moss was unseeded. No. 8 seed, P. Alexander (Canterbury) was beaten by J.
