HARBOUR BRIDGE AT AUCKLAND
Opening Date May Be May 30
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 20.
The Auckland harbour bridge might be opened on May 30, said the chairman of the bridge authority (Sir John Allum) today, but the date depended on the linking of the northern and southern sections of the bridge’s navigation arch. This is expected to be completed in about 10 weeks. Up to that point, progress on the bridge is governed by the weather. Once the steel work is finished, it becomes a simpler “road-building” job and accurate estimates of progress can be made. The bridge authority has collected the programmes of opening ceremonies for similar major bridges overseas to help it plan the programme. “There will be nothing ostentatious in the ceremony,” Sir John Allum said. “It will be simple and dignified.”
