SYDNEY, Jan. 20. An 18-year-old nurse was burnt to death in a fire which swept through the upper storey of a convalescent home for aged people, in suburban Sydney last night Police have not released the dead girl’s name. The fire swept through the

upper storey of the rambling 100-year-old house and threatened 17 aged and invalid patients who were sleeping on the ground floor. Neighbours fought back flames and smoke for half an hour to evacuate the terrified patients Neighbours said the dead nurse was asleep in the staff quarters in an attic at the top of the building when the fire broke out. Neighbours, wrapping towels around their heads to shield them- 1 selves from the belching smoke, rushed to the nurse’s room, but ■ were driven back by intense heat, and suffocating smoke.
