Ministry Of Works Repairs
(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 16. Ministry of Works men have been busy at Taumarunui repairing the damage to the Wanganui river stopbanks caused by recent rises in the river level.
Surveyors have been taking levels and plotting the course of the river. It is not known however, what work the department intends to do A spokesman said the department’s aim was merely to prevent the river overflowing should the water rise. A temporary stopbank was being built out of sand and sandbags about 15ft back from what is now the edge of the river. About 500 cubic yards of sand had earlier been dumped for this purpose.
The spokesman could not say what would be done to repair the damage already done.
