SURPRISE AT RACE RIOT REACTION
“Shock To Wake Them
Up.” Says Dr. Fisher
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, January 14. The Archbishop of Canterbury (Dr. Geoffrey Fisher) said today he was surprised Britain should have been so shocked by last August’s racial riots at Nottingham and Notting Hill, London. The Primate was addressing the Upper House (Bishops) of the Convocation of Canterbury, which was considering a racial resolu-tion-already adopted by the Lower House. “If we live in»a country where lawless violence of all kinds is extending daily, I cannot understand why people should be so surprised that -this particular manifestation, however harmful, should happen,” he said. “If the country did not recognise the peril it was in before, I think it is not a bad thing that the people Of this country should have had this shock to wake them up.”
