Labour Shortage Causes Delay
(New Zealand Presi Association) NELSON. January 15 Harvesting of. a promising tobacco crop in the Nelson district is being delayed by a serious shortage of female labour. For most tobacco farmers harvesting Is about to start. Some have already picked the first leaves. More than 200 women workers ire needed in various parts of the district
A bumper crop was expected till Christmas Day, when heavy rain waterlogged many fields and washed away valuable manures. Picking this week is 10 d&ys earlier than the normal starting time. The amount of tobacco being grown this season is slightly more than last, when about 320 Q acres were planted.
