CYCLING K. BROWN RIDES WELL AT COMBINED MEETING

K. Brown showed his paces in the final of the two-lap cash handicap at the Combined Cycling Clubs’ meeting at English Park last evening. Riding from the scratch mark, he was 15 lengths behind the leaders going down the back straight for the last time. Over the last 220 yards, with an amazing burst of speed, he went round the field to win by a length from B. Leatham. In the three-lap cash handicap the back markers were up with the main bunch with just over a lap to go, and remained with them for some time without realising that the two front markers, J. Haines and R. Harrison, were still out in the lead. They made a bid with a little' less than half a lap to go, but only Brown could make any impression. He took second place, five lengths behind Harrison. In match sprints Brown accounted for K. Giles in two straight sprints. D. Swanston, Brown and J Williams rode well in the 10-lap points race, to fill the first three places. Brown was placed m nine of the 10 laps, but Swanston, with five firsts, a second and a third had sufficient points to win without trying in the last lap.

Amateur Sprints T. Weir sprinted brilliantly to come round L. Lock and beat him in the first round of the 500 metre amateur sprints. In the third round G. Osborne showed brilliant tactics to stall B. Brettell and then race away to win by three lengths. J Beere had little difficulty in accounting for G. McMullan.

In the final Weir showed his superiority over Beere and Osborne. Weir is possibly one of the strongest amateur sprinters.

A field of 12 riders started m the five mile scratch event and from the gun the pace was fast. After a mile the field started to spread out, but a slow lap let the others up. With seven laps to go G. Weddell opened up a gap on the field and was followed by L. Lock and T. Kenny. Weddell and Kenny kept up to their work but Lock dropped back. Seeing these two strong riders out in front R. Fowler rode hard to Join them, and then they slowed up and let the field up.

Two taps from the finish the field was tightly bunched and at the bell Weddell lead out and held the lead to the bottom banking, when Kenny went into the lead and won by a length from Weddell with Lock in third place. The results were:— Cash Events
