LADY DOUGLAS WAS MODEL
Shorter Skirts Remarks
Lady Douglas of Kirtleside. who recently started a controversy by suggesting that receptionists of the British European Airways should shorten their uniform skirts by three inches, was formerly a model for one of the “Top Twelve” designers, says a London correspondent. Because of Lady Douglas’s remarks about shorter skirts, made casually to her husband who is chairman of the airways company, charges of “petticoat rule" have been made in the organisation. When modelling, Lady Douglas had the smallest mannequin waist in London—lB inches at a pinch. A few years ago she modelled at a Royal fashion preview attended by the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. Lady Douglas, who is 40,’ was Mrs Hazel Walker, a war-widow, before her second marriage three years ago. Lord Douglas is 64.
Now Lady Douglas has a 17month daughter, Katharine, and her waist has crept a little over the 18-inch mark. But. she remains elegant and extremely fashion conscious.
Although she says her legs are “too thin,” she took up her skirts as soon as the short length became fashionable.
