Trawling consists of one large gentleman holding a pole on which a tennis net is tied. At the other end of the net, also holding a pole, is a small gentleman. The small gentleman marches briskly seawards until his head disappears beneath the higher waves. The large gentleman waits at ankle depth. Then, with a volley of encouragement from those gathered on the shore, who occasionally check up on the trawlers with their flashlights, the trawl begins. Muscles ache and creak, the water slops sulkily over the man at the deep end, feet are cut on pipis as the net is drawn with painful effort through the sea. But when the shoreward sweep begins, the excitement is intense. As the net is dragged out of the water, there is a concerted rush from spectators. The catch almost invariably consists of a fine collection of kelp, crabs, and curses. There is no uncertainty about the returns brought by use of the classified advertisements in “The Press.” Their yield is regular, and rewarding.
