FRENCHMAN LOST IN BLIZZARD
Hope Abandoned
There is no hope of finding alive the Frenchman lost in an Antarctic blizzard last week, according to a signal received by the United States Navy in Christchurch yesterday. The translation of the signal transmitted from the French base. D’Urville, on the coast of Adelie Land reads as follows: < “Advise with sadness of the disappearance of our chief meteorologist Andre Prudhomme on January 7, 1959, in the course of a blizzard. After a vain search we have lost all hope of finding him alive. “Andre Prudhomme had already wintered over once before in Antarctic at Port Martine, in i 1951, and was our leading specialist in Antarctic meteorology.” The meteorologist is reported to have left the buildings to look at scientific instruments in the vicinity The American Antarctic commander (Rear-Admiral G r J. Dufek) has sent his condolences to the French expedition.
