SETTLEMENT CRITICISED

“Opportune Time To Face Strike”

(New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, January 15. Criticism of the employers’ representatives for agreeing to demands made by the New Zealand Dairy Factory Workers’ Union was expressed at a special meeting of the Taranaki section of the New Zealand Dairy Factory Employers’ Association at Stratford today. It was contended that now was an opportune time to fade the consequences of a strike. Attended by 46 of the 52 Taranaki dairy companies, the meeting, which was held in committee after the president (Mr L. J. Rundle) had explained reasons for reaching an agreement with the union, believed that the consequences of a strike would Have to be faced at some future time. It was unanimously agreed that no further agreements would be entered into outside the Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act

The meeting unanimously adopted a resolution expressing “the gravest concern at the cir-

cumstances which forced acceptance by the industry’s representatives of the demands of the workers’ union to avoid the illegal action proposed by it.” The resolution also expressed “the gravest concern at the complete lack of responsibility shown by the Government in its duty to uphold the arbitration laws of the country, notwithstanding the extent to which the industry was prepared to go to support the Government in any such action.” Finally, the meeting supported a resolution expressing appreciation of “the attitude and support of dairy factory employees throughout Taranaki, as shown by the indication given that they would continue to process milk and cream' throughout the province.’ ’
