So the Bentley business was virtually unsupported. The two, great firms of Rolls-Royce and Napier were to bid against each other for the goodwill and assets. One is left with the feeling that W. O. Bentley was humiliated as he saw independence and his life’s work slipping from his hands.

This man might have faded into obscurity, but in 1947 his genius was once again put to good use. He designed the prototype engine which now powers the high-per-formance Aston-Martin. Today he lives modestly in Surrey, grateful for a bank balance "out of the red.” And if the thrilling "womp, womp” of a vintage Bentley stirs his memories, they are memories he can recall with pride.
